Dangerous by Design

Dangerous by Design: Solving the Epidemic of Preventable Pedestrian Death (and Making Great Neighborhoods) ranks metropolitan areas based on the relative danger of walking. Nearly 5,000 Americans die preventable deaths each year on roads that fail to provide safe conditions for pedestrians. More than 43,000 Americans – including 3,906 children under 16 – have been killed this decade alone. More than 76,000 Americans have died in the last 15 years. This is the equivalent of a jumbo jet going down roughly every month, yet it receives nothing like that kind of attention.

Interactive State Fact Sheets

When it comes to transportation infrastructure, no state is being left untouched by budget cuts and neglect. Everywhere, roads and bridges are crumbling and demand for housing close to public transportation or in convenient walkable neighborhoods is skyrocketing — but not every state is reacting to these challenges in the same way. Check out our comprehensive state-by-state analysis of how America is doing on transportation in an interactive map. Visit http://t4america.org/statefacts

Stranded at the Station

Americans across the country, in towns large and small, are being hurt by fare increases and draconian cuts in public transportation service, an epidemic that did not have to happen, according to this joint report from Transportation for America and the Transportation Equity Network. Stranded at the Station: The Impact of the Financial Crisis in Public Transportation is the first systematic analysis of the conundrum faced by communities and their transit systems: Historic ridership and levels of demand for service, coupled with the worst funding crisis in decades. United States of Transit Cuts

This interactive Google map highlights communities across the U.S. that face job cuts, service reductions and fare hikes. It was compiled initially from media reports and coverage of proposed and realized cuts, and since augmented with the data from the Stranded at the Station report above. Click through to see the map and see the systems facing cuts or fare increases — nearly 3 out of 4 transit systems nationwide. See the map at http://t4america.org/transitcuts
